pinterest seo practices

pinterest seo practices

Author: Ron Jacobsen
It is quite interesting how Pinterest is rising up the ladder and making the news as of late. They have been receiving so much buzz as more and more users are actually using Pinterest.com
So what is Pinterest and how does it valuate to anyone in the search engine optimization perspective?
As simple as it is to say that Pinterest is just another social bookmarking website and what makes it stand out right now among the others are
1. Social User BasePinterest actually has a lot of users adding Pins and interacting with each other. Their main model of focusing on the images itself other than anything else makes it simple and easy to use. It is one of those websites that real people are using it and tapping into what matters. As long as there is live and interactive user base, the opportunity for marketing is always there. This is why it was said that it was a good traffic driver for retailers. But that topic should be discussed in another article.
2. Do-follow LinksNow this is something what most SEO enthusiasts out there are trying to take advantage of. For Pinterest, the links that you can create are somehow Do-Follow link other than no-follow meaning that PageRank for pages is actually passed and valuation of each link from the website is somehow relevant in a lite way.
As search engines follow the links you create, implementing keyword centric descriptions would have its impact in keywords that you wish to rank your pages into.
Here are a few tips that you can do to utilize Pinterest to benefit your SEO efforts.
Setup your About Information – Create a keyword centric description about yourself and your company (website).
Share your pages – this is something that makes Pinterest easier, you share a link – you grab a photo and pin, and you can share your link more than one time as long as it has more photos to share on it. But the links you create are all valid links which adds value to your pages as well.
Create Keyword Rich Boards – if you want to be known about a specific industry or niche, create relevant boards where you can post your links as well as other relevant images for the industry. Remember to use it as a person and not just a marketer.
Share relevant and interesting images along with your own relevant images and it will have the same effect in all images which promotes your brand altogether.
Follow and be followed! – as a Pinterest enthusiast it is also important to mingle. This goes the same as the saying “before you can lead, you must follow” connecting with other people may have an impact to your links as you give your pins more audience and chances to be liked, or re-pinned.
Create Links in your Description – now this is something can be more interesting in leading people to your website. In doing so please make sure that when you create your links, just use your url (www.yourdomain.com), no http://, and no using of html for anchor text.
I have listed a general guideline on how you can promote yourself, or your company website on Pinterest. Please be responsible in the things that you share in your accounts and most of all, do not spam.Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/seo-articles/pinterest-seo-and-best-practices-5656674.html

Alt Tags and Titles

Alt Tags and Titles Can Get Your Web Site Indexed On Search Engines
Author: Bruce Wood
Even the best web sites are useless if no one can find them!  Here is a tip professionals use- on how to set up your site to be search-engine friendly by using alt tags and titles. To understand what a search engine “spider” sees when it crawls across your site, you have to keep in mind that the spider only understands text. .  This means that if your site is heavy on pictures and short on written words,  the spider won’t really understand what your site is all about.  It needs clues, and those clues need to be written out as clearly as possible. How do you do that without adding paragraphs of text and revising your great layout?  It’s not as difficult as it seems, but does take a bit of planning and logical thinking.  The first tip is to take advantage of ALL of the opportunities on your page to add titles and “alt” tags.  These tags are invisible to site visitors, but the spiders love them.  If you are designing your own pages, then you already have seen where these tags and titles go, but maybe you have ignored them.  BIG mistake!  Use every one, and fill them with relevant words (keywords) that you want your site to rank for in the search engines.  If you use a web designer, then provide the designer with one title and one alt tag description for each photograph on the page.  This includes the header image, and any custom button images on the page.  Oh yes– and don’t forget a descriptive title for the page itself! What kind of descriptions?  Here’s an example, using an art gallery site’s “exhibitions” page:  The page title could be “Monthly fine art exhibitions at the Famous Art Gallery”; The header image title could be “Famous Art Gallery in Bigtown USA Presents Modern And Traditional Fine Art” and have an alt tag description of “Fine Art Exhibitions By International Artists at the Famous Art Gallery”; The photo of a painting could be titled “Blue and Gold Sofa-Size Fine Art Painting By Award Winning Artist” and have an alt tag description “Award winning sofa-size art”;  A navigation button labeled “Artists” could have a title “Contemporary artists showing at the Famous Art Gallery” and an alt description of “Modern and Traditional Fine Artists Showing in Bigtown USA.”Use all of  the alt tags and titles available on your page.  Any text, photo or button which is linked to another URL will also give you the opportunity to add a descriptive phrase to the link. So, do you get the idea of how easily you can let the spiders know what your site is all about, without redoing everything on the pages and writing copious paragraphs?  Use as many descriptive keywords and phrases as possible to get the point across.  Remember- photo tags and titles are invisible to site visitors, but the titles may appear if their cursor rests on an image.  So use the descriptions that make sense when a viewer sees them pop up.  It will add a professional flair to your site, and add value to the users’ experience.Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/seo-articles/alt-tags-and-titles-can-get-your-web-site-indexed-on-search-engines-4156625.html

Copyright Law and SEO – Part 1

Dec 21st, 2011 by Spider Choice

I think this is an important read for all SEO publishers and is posted with the permission of the Author.
If we get enough good comments we will gladly post parts 2 and 3.

by Ian McAnerin

Copyright Law and SEO Part 1

What is Copyright and why would an SEO care?

What Is Copyright?

Copyright is a legal right granted to the authors of certain artistic or creative works. I’m sure that wasn’t very helpful, so allow me to explain: it literally means “the right to copy”. This “copying” can be in the form of translated or derivative versions, reproductions, public or private distributions, displays, or broadcasts.

SEO’s encounter copyright issues all the time. One of the most important things we bring to a client – unique, effective, keyword rich content – is the very thing copyright law serves to protect. A computer can’t just spit it out. It is this creative element that helps to make a site stand out well on the search engine rankings. Google isn’t interested in indexing the same content over and over again, and it also removes computer generated “landing pages” whenever it finds them from it’s results.

By offering fresh, informative content to the search engines and the visitors, the SEO (and SEO aware copywriter) helps a website achieve high rankings without the costs of pay per click, banner ads, and other forms of advertising. This translates into more money in your clients pocket for the same (and often better) results and traffic. Naturally this content is worth a lot to your client, and by extension, you.

Unfortunately, there are many persons in the world who do not respect basic principles of fairness, sometimes due to issues of moral bankruptcy or deliberately criminal behavior, and sometimes due to an inability to understand what the big deal is.

Rather than coming up with their own content, they would rather steal yours. Even worse, once they have stolen your content, it’s no longer “unique” and therefore not as likely to be ranked highly – in some cases you could be dropped off the results all together, if the infringers site is older than yours.

Copyright infringement has become even more prevalent since the beginning of the computer generation. In the past, the copyright violator had to go through some effort and expense in order to, for example, copy a painting or record a musical number. Today a perfect digital image of an original picture, literary work or sound recording can be copied and transmitted to millions of people almost instantly. The ease of this transmission, along with it’s high quality, has lent itself to a whole new generation of people who seem to feel that anything that can be found on the internet is or should be free for the taking.

How Do I get a Copyright?

Easy – do something creative and original and commit it to some form of recording. An oral speech is not copyrightable, but as soon as it’s recorded or written down, that recording is automatically copyrighted. There is no need to register something in order to obtain copyright protection.

You can’t copyright: ideas, equations, thoughts, names, data, or things that should instead be patented, trademarked, or registered as an industrial design.

You can copyright: web copy, articles, musical recordings, video recordings, photos, designs, computer programs and most artwork.

How Do You Prove Your Work is Your Own?

One way is to register it. This is a method by which you take a copy of your work (for example, put your website on CD) and register it with a third party who can provide proof that you had this information as of a specific time.

There are several reasons to register your copyrighted material — first, you have proof on file. Second, registration creates an automatic assumption in the courts that your copyright is valid and that all your statements in the application for it are true. Third, in the US you are then able to take advantage of several statutory advantages that are not available otherwise.

If you don’t register it, your options are more limited, but they are available. Some people use the Wayback Machine to show an approximate publication time, but if your site is new or not indexed it may not help you. You can also point to file dates and so forth, but as you can imagine on the internet these things are easy to forge.

Some Popular Misconceptions

In the old days, if you didn’t have a copyright symbol and date on your copyrighted work you were in trouble. This is no longer the case in most countries. The format is usually:
Copyright © 2003 Your Name. All Rights Reserved.
It’s really hard for an infringer to stand up in court and say he didn’t know it was copyrighted when this notice is at the bottom of the pages he stole the content from. In order to receive protection under the Berne Convention, you were originally required to use the © symbol, but most countries have changed that requirement. I would strongly recommend using it though.

Remember that if you become aware of a copyright infringement and choose not to enforce your rights, you may find yourself prevented (“estopped”) from complaining the next time. Always defend your rights. Even if it’s minor, at the very least tell them you want permission asked for the use.

Fair Use and other Defenses

There are times when you can legitimately use someone’s copyrighted materials. But since this is also one of the automatic defenses infringers use, it’s important to know what fair use is, and isn’t.

Fair use (also called fair dealing in Canada) basically covers the ability to make copies of a work for “legitimate” purposes. This includes the ability for you to print off a copy of a web page at home for personal research purposes, and for public review, criticism or news reporting.

It does not cover the copying of all or substantially all of a work for public display. In short, if you rip off an article or artwork from someone else’s website, and then make some minor formatting changes and perhaps alter a byline and a bit of text, and then post it as your own, you are clearly and obviously infringing copyright.

There is a very fine distinction between fair use and infringement, and there is no specific amount or percentage that is “safe”. Quoting a few lines is safe, quoting the whole article is not. In Canada, fair dealing for criticism, news, or review requires a full citation to the original author. This is not required in the US, but I would recommend it anyway.

Summary

If you want effective copyright protection on your work, do this:

1. Create an original and creative document – web copy, website design, or artwork.

2. Once you have created this work, place a © copyright notice on it.

3. Register the work in your home country (if available), and perhaps the USA as well.

4. Defend your rights consistently and vigorously

In the next article, I’ll discuss what to do if you find out someone has been infringing your copyright.

SEO Advantages

Jul 8th, 2011 by Spider Choice

SEO Advantages

By Paul P Estcott

You might ask yourself, is it really worth it to spend time on SEO (Search Engine Optimization) in order to promote your website? The answer, of course, is yes – whether you are posting bulk content or specialized high quality content. That’s because SEO can result in increased business. And isn’t that the reason you have a website in the first place?SEO allows you to build pages that the search engines can find and then decipher once they discover them. This is called producing indexed pages. When you have successfully indexed the pages on your site, they will begin to appear in the search results when customers conduct keyword searches. For this to work well, you need to build easily navigable links, ensuring that your site architecture is search engine friendly. Not only must you establish site hierarchy correctly, your content must be readable. It must be readable, that is, by both search engine bots and human beings.Employment of good SEO practices also allows you to capture visitors to your site. While this is not your ultimate objective, it is necessary to have visitors if you want to increase sales. Once you start achieving rankings, your visitor count will rise. This holds true even if you use low volume keywords.Good SEO practices will also result in higher search rankings for your site. However, you should not concentrate on rankings alone. While they are important – good rankings mean that your site is readily visible – they do not necessarily equate with sales. All they do is facilitate site entrance by your customers. All this leads to the achievement of conversions, the ultimate goal of using SEO. If you reach the goals you have set of conversion counts and percentages, you will have achieved the ultimate advantage of SEO. A conversion can be anything that you define, including comments to your blog posts, product purchases, gaining Twitter followers or downloads of your marketing white papers. When using SEO, you need to remember that search engines, smart as they are, nonetheless are stupid about some things. For example, they cannot determine intent from the information they capture from their bots. Therefore, if intent is necessary to determine relevance of a page or keyword, neither Google, Bing nor Yahoo! Search will be able to tell. And also remember that human visitors to your website lack patience. If your site is hard to navigate, they will not go after additional information or make purchases. Instead, they will go to some other site where they can easily find what they are looking for.Mbiz Content provides premium, high quality content and bulk content to meet your internet marketing needs and attract customers to your website. Website Promotion – Why It’s Important

Jul 8th, 2011 by Spider Choice

Website Promotion – Why It’s Important

By Jason Kay

A major mistake companies make when conducting online business is to believe their website is properly optimized or worse yet, not understand the importance of website promotion. The most beautifully designed, concise, innovative and easily navigable website is useless if no one can see it. An estimated 70% of web users never go past the first page of major search engines with only 4% going beyond page three. Essentially, this means that your website is practically invisible if it fails to get into the top three pages with top page ranking desirable for companies that actually want to be a success.Promote Or VanishFailure to promote your website ensures it remains in the background, destined never to see the light of day. The most infuriating thing many companies do is to spend a small fortune on web designers while forgetting to splash out on a marketing team. A website that makes the first page of the Google and Yahoo search engine rankings is worth its weight in gold. Remember, if you fail to properly promote your website, rest assured, your competitor will promote theirs and make the first page of the search engines. This will essentially wipe you out. There are a host of different methods of website promotion such as banner ads and Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising. This can cost thousands of dollars and might not even be effective. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) on the other hand, is relatively inexpensive and is a tried and tested way to get your website seen online. SEO is essentially a method of using techniques such as adding links and carefully placed keywords within your website in a manner that attracts the attention of search engine spiders that trawl the web. A well thought out SEO campaign will cost very little and is likely to shoot your website to the top of the search engine rankings.KeywordsContent is king when it comes to SEO. An increasing number of organizations foolishly believe in keyword stuffing when it comes to promoting their websites. They are of the opinion that a 4% keyword density is the best method of achieving success. This is an extremely flawed system because Google and other search engines penalize such practices by declaring the site to be spam. What many website owners don’t understand is that search engines compare each site to their top ranking sites in the same niche. Top ranking websites generally have a keyword density of between 1-2%. This means that sites with a much higher density are red-flagged and kicked off the rankings.Another website promotion tip involves using a title of between 5-8 descriptive words for all your webpages. Remove unnecessary words from the title. When your page is found, the page title will show up on search engines and be hyperlinked. Always use your company name and some keywords describing the business on your site’s homepage. Titles are among the first things search engine spiders look at. Therefore, your titles are the key to online success.Instead of spending thousands of dollars and weeks of time on web design, start planning your website promotion strategy today in order to be seen by millions of prospective customers around the world. Once your website is in the public eye, you can then start worrying about making it more aesthetically pleasing.Jason Kay recommends learning how you can make a professional, affordable website on your own using a website builder. You can read website builder reviews to learn more about the various options available. By saving money on your website creation, you can budget more money toward marketing and promoting your website.

Improve your websites performance

Jun 6th, 2011 by Spider Choice
Improve your websites performance

By: Rob Jones
How well is your website performing? Are you satisfied with the amount of customers who view your website? Do you get enough business through your website? By reading this article you will be in a position to do something about all three questions.

It’s all very well having a nicely designed and appealing website for your business but it’s of no use if you don’t get the customers to visit it. The number one term you will find associated with this is search engine optimisation. You will find endless sources on the Internet telling you to optimise this and optimise that but what does it all mean?

Search engine optimisation simply means making your website as friendly to search engines as possible. Search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN provide your business with the ability to reach a huge amount of customer’s, they are by far the most successful method to boost sales for your business. If your website is nicely optimised then you will have a greater chance of appearing higher up on the search engines.

Most customers will type in a phrase into the search engine and view the first couple of websites that it finds, they will usually be successful in finding what they were looking for on the first page of results. Statistics show that customers very rarely look further than the first page (90% don’t look past the first page) so what good is it if your website was on page 10? This is where search engine optimisation comes in, it will give your business a greater chance of being on that first golden page in the search engines.

There are many methods that all contribute to a higher ranking but some are more influential than others. The first factor is having a well built website. This is a standard feature that all website design companies should offer.

The second method is keywords. Keywords are the words that are associated with your business, the idea is to include these words in your website so when a customer types in a phrase in a search engine, your website is more likely to appear. Keywords should be chosen carefully to target the correct market for your business. It’s no good targeting the word “Fruit” if your business sells website design.

The third factor that contributes to a high search engine ranking is back links. This simply means a link from someone else’s website to yours. The more links you have to your website the better. Search engines view your back links as a sign of popularity and obviously the more popular you are the more successful you appear.

One of the best methods for this is to submit your website to online directories, not only will you get a back link but you are also likely to get a lot of customers coming to your website from that link. Make sure that you select trusted directories and one’s that can relate to your business, there is a chance that you will get penalised by search engines if you sign up to link farms (websites that collect lot’s of spam and poor quality links).

Finally, having a website that is constantly updated also gives you a boost in terms of search engines as they like to see fresh content. This is also likely to draw customers back to your website as they know they are likely to see something new. This in turn will boost the amount of traffic you get to your website which will also help in gaining a higher search engine rank.

These are just some of the methods in which you can improve your website performance, there are many other factors that contribute to a high search engine ranking. Most are an on-going process so it is very beneficial to your business to continually try to improve your performance as there is always someone competing against you for that top spot.

Search Engine Mistakes to Avoid

Apr 24th, 2011 by Spider Choice

Some older well established points but always worth repeating.
10 Costly Search Engine Mistakes to Avoid
By: Brad Eden
If you have a website then you already know the importance of traffic. Traffic is to Internet marketing as location is to real estate. It’s the only thing that really matters. If you cannot generate targeted visitors to your site, you will not make any sales.

Usually the owner or designer of the website is the person designated to drive traffic to the site. The chief ingredient in generating traffic is the search engine. Of coarse, you can use advertising, but it’s going to cost you. Using the search engines to generate targeted (interested in your product) traffic is the least expensive method known.

Unfortunately, many website owners do not understand the importance of search engine visibility, which leads to traffic. They place more importance on producing a “pretty” website. Not that this is bad, but it is really secondary to search engine placement. Hopefully, the following list of common mistakes, made by many website owners, will help you generate more targeted traffic to your site…after all, isn’t that what you want.

1. Not using keywords effectively.
This is probably one of the most critical area of site design. Choose the right keywords and potential customers will find your site. Use the wrong ones and your site will see little, if any, traffic.

2. Repeating the same keywords. When you use the same keywords over and over again (called keyword stacking) the search engines may downgrade (or skip) the page or site.

3. Robbing pages from other websites.
How many times have you heard or read that “this is the Internet and it’s ok” to steal icons and text from websites to use on your site. Don’t do it. Its one thing to learn from others who have been there and another to outright copy their work. The search engines are very smart and usually detect page duplication. They may even prevent you from ever being listed by them.

4. Using keywords that are not related to your website.
Many unethical website owners try to gain search engine visibility by using keywords that have nothing at all to do with their website. They place unrelated keywords in a page (such as “sex”, the name of a known celebrity, the hot search topic of the day, etc.) inside a meta tag for a page. The keyword doesn’t have anything to do with the page topic. However, since the keyword is popular, they think this will boost their visibility. This technique is considered spam by the search engines and may cause the page (or sometimes the whole site) to be removed from the search engine listing.

5. Keyword stuffing.
Somewhat like keyword stacking listed above, this means to assign multiple keywords to the description of a graphic or layer that appears on your website by using the “alt=” HTML parameter. If the search engines find that this text does not really describe the graphic or layer it will be considered spam.

6. Relying on hidden text.
You might be inclined to think that if you cannot see it, it doesn’t hurt. Wrong…. Do not try to hide your keywords or keyword phrases by making them invisible. For example, some unethical designers my set the keywords to the same color as the background of the web page; thereby, making it invisible.

7. Relying on tiny text.
This is another version of the item above (relying on hidden text). Do not try to hide your keywords or keyword phrases by making them tiny. Setting the text size of the keywords so small that it can barely be seen does this.

8. Assuming all search engines are the same. Many people assume that each search engine plays by the same rules. This is not so. Each has their own rule base and is subject to change anytime they so desire. Make it a point to learn what each major search engine requires for high visibility.

9. Using free web hosting.
Do not use free web hosting if you are really serious about increasing site traffic via search engine visibility. Many times the search engines will eliminate content from these free hosts.

10. Forgetting to check for missing web page elements.
Make sure to check every page in your website for completeness, like missing links, graphics, etc. There are sites on the web that will do this for free.

This is just a few of the methods and techniques that you should avoid. Do not give in to the temptation that these methods will work for you. They will do more harm than good for your website.

Not only will you spend weeks of wasted effort, you may have your site banned from the search engines forever. Invest a little time to learn the proper techniques for increasing search engine visibility and your net traffic will increase.

The Steps Before Website Traffic
By: Mike Burke
By now, you probably already have the theme of your website established, your keywords picked and your website ready to go live. You’re thinking that you’ll submit your site to the search engines, sit back and see how much traffic the search engines will send you, right?

STOP! There are many different avenues you can take to drive traffic to your site but they should only be taken after you make the search engines your first priority. The search engines should be your foundation. They’ll always send you a certain amount of traffic if you have a high page rank.

IMPORTANT!

Your website must be ‘set up’ for a high page rank in the search engines and it’s important to do it ‘before’ you submit your site for the first time. Here’s the reason why:

Usually, after you submit your website to the search engines for the first time, your website will be ‘spidered’ fairly quickly and hopefully your site will be listed on one of the top pages.

Your website may not get ‘spidered’ again for months so if you make changes to optimize your site, you may not see your changes take effect for quite a while. You could be stuck on a back page, if any page at all, for a very long time.

Without getting into the mechanics of designing your website, here are the basics of setting up your website to be search engine friendly.

THE FIRST STEP is to establish the main keyword for your site. This is the word or phrase that you want people to type into the search engines to find your website. It’s important to have your site focused around your main keyword.

Let’s say you have a site dedicated to ‘building your own home’ so we’ll use ‘home building’ as our main keyword example.

THE NEXT STEP is to create a title for your website and to place it in the ‘title tag’ of your site. The ‘title tag’ should be the first tag in the ‘head’ of your site and it’s important because many search engines use the contents of the ‘title tag’ as the title of the listing. They also look for keywords in the title and your main keyword should be the first words in the title.

Generally, your title should be no more than 40 characters and, again, it should begin with your main keyword. Try to avoid using ‘stop words’ in your title. Stop words are transition words such as – and, but, or, for, with, etc.

Here’s a possible title using our example main keyword ‘home building’ – Home Building – Home Construction Plans

Notice our main keyword is first, the title is less than 40 characters (39), there are no stop words and we managed to sneak in 3 secondary keywords – home construction, construction plans and home construction plans. Clever huh?

THE NEXT STEP is to create a ‘keywords meta tag’. This is where you list all the keywords you want to use for your website starting with your ‘main keyword’. A good rule of thumb is to use about 20 keywords and your main keyword should be contained in about half of them.

Using our example keyword ‘home building’ our keywords could be – home building, home construction, home building plans, home building cost, construction plans, etc.

Notice I didn’t use our main keyword ‘home building’ twice in a row. For example – home building, home building plans, etc. Search engines might see this as spam and it could hurt your ranking.

THE NEXT STEP is to create a ‘description meta tag’. This is where you describe your website and, again, you should start with your main keyword.

Keep your description to about 150 characters, use as few ‘stop words’ as you can and sprinkle in as many secondary keywords as possible.
Make your description interesting because search engines often use the contents in your ‘description meta tag’ as the description of your website in the listing.

THE NEXT STEP is to use your keywords often in the body of your website. Make sure your ‘main keyword’ is somewhere in the beginning and at the end of the body of your page.

It’s a good idea to use your main keyword in an ‘h1′ tag and a few of your secondary keywords in an ‘h2′ tag. This tells the search engines that you put importance on your keywords.

It’s also a good idea to underline your main keyword no more than once and to use bold text for your main keyword no more than once.

Although there are other factors that determine your position in the search engines, having the basics of what search engines look for will give you a much better chance of making that illusive first page and driving consistent website traffic to your site.
